During the first unit in math we will focus our efforts on Place value. Students will learn to:
Identify different numeral values
Represent numbers in different ways
Compare and order different numbers (such as largest to smallest and greater than, less than)
Round numbers appropriately dependent on what the question is asking
Work with money (identifying coins and bills, making change, and skip counting to increase the speed of counting money).
Basic Facts
Memorization of basic facts is a large part of the success for students in Grade 3 mathematics. We will have a weekly basic facts quiz to review and reinforce basic facts for memorization. This will greatly influence the understanding and progress in the units of multiplication and division which will occur later in the school year. Please continue to work with the students at home on these basic math facts, as we will need to be both efficient and accurate in our work.
If you need additional practice at home, please try these websites!
The purpose of the Problem Solving booklet is to demonstrate that some questions have multiple paths to a correct solution and to help build critical thinking skills with your child.
While the actual work is not for marks on a report card, parents in the past have noticed that as their child improved in the Problem Solving, they tend to improve in areas such as: reading comprehension, basic mathematics, and even research skills.
We mark each week's "assigned" questions on Thursdays together as a class so students can see what others in their class have done to solve the problems. New assigned questions will come out each Thursday.
